albany watershed adventures

An Albany Watershed brookie being released.

Live the Dream

You don't have to just read about monster brook trout anymore. We are now offering trips to our favorite fly-in destinations in Northwestern Ontario. Packages include all transportation from Thunder Bay, Ontario to our fly-in lodges along the Albany River Watershed. Just get on the De Havilland float plane and we take care of the rest. Through our partners at Wilderness North you will be housed in comfortable housing and fed like a king (or queen!) Brook trout fishing is available near the lodge but for the real trophies we recommend a NativeBrookTrout.com approved canoe trip down the Keezhik Creek, the Troutfly Creek and/or the Albany River. These day long adventures offer solitude and unspoiled beauty with just the right amount of excitement as you shoot the rapids and hook enormous brook trout on both fly and spinning tackle. Drop us a line at albanyriver@nativebrooktrout.com.

The Water

We can customize your dream trip to suit the needs of your party. Brook trout can be had just minutes from the lodge or you can enjoy the thrill of fly-out adventures from the fly-in lodge. You can't get much more remote than that! Both spin and fly tackle are welcome and canoes and all supplies other than tackle are included. We will provide you with a checklist to make sure you are well equipped for each of your adventures. Currently we offer three proven destinations but plan on opening more next spring after careful scouting (I love that part!)

Albany River

This is the backbone of this entire watershed and a truly historic brook trout fishery. Trout can be found in areas accessible via boat or float plane and will provide the angler with a big water experience unlike anything most brook trout fisherman have ever experienced. The trout will be found in rapids beneath scenic waterfalls and in long stretches of rapids. Expert boat handlers will guide the boat just where you need to be to hook up with Albany monster brook trout. This river provides hundreds of miles of brook trout, pike and walleye habitat in the unspoiled wilderness.

Keezhik Creek

The Keezhik is an experience that every serious brook trout fisherman should enjoy at least once in their life. The water is medium size but the trout are huge and always cooperative. It is a scenic river filled with traditional trout water and numerous deep pools and runs. I can't say enough about this fishery. When I fall asleep at night, I dream about the Keezhik. It is brook trout perfection.

Trout Fly Creek

Although it doesn't have the size and numbers of the Keezhik, this is my favorite stream in Northwest Ontario. It is smaller than the Keezhik but very easy to run and absolutely stunning. The Trout Fly is about 2/3 the length of the Keezhik making for a shorter, less strenous trip and leaving plenty of time for some leisurely walleye and pike fishing after you finish. This is the stream to take Dad on for that once in a lifetime adventures without the peril of dangerous rapids. This is definitely the place to break out the camera.

Brook trout over 20" are common in the watershed and will readily hit sculpin patterns.

outfitting

The native guides are really at home in this remote wilderness environment.
Their ability to enter the bush in just jeans and boots makes me feel like a wuss.

Guides

Your pricing includes guide services for your entire trip. They are all expert boat handlers and can put you on the fish and make sure you are throwing the right flies and lures to get the job done.

Supplies

You supply the tackle and we will keep you fed and hydrated. All trips include three squares, snacks and beverages. Lund Aluminum boats with 25 hp motors are used along the Albany while canoes are the mode of transportation on the Keezhik and the Troutfly. Small outboards are available for the canoes if flatwater paddling isn't your idea of fun

Season and Rod Limits

Albany River brook trout adventures can be booked from the last week of May until the second week of July. Although brook trout can be had after these dates, the numbers tend to go down and it takes more work to put the guests on them. Together with the folks from Wilderness North we have put a cap of six brook trout anglers per four day adventure to preserve this resource and keep the fishing pressure to a minimum. We are very careful to not overfish a body of water and keep the rod numbers to a minimum. When you book a day on the Keezhik or the Trout Fly, you get the whole river to yourself. We wouldn't have it any other way.

accommodations

The main lodge is a great place to unwind and trade fish stories after a day on the water.

Lodging

My friends think I am a burley outdoorsman who makes these treks up to the wilderness of Northwest Ontario where I eat raw seal meat and sleep under logs. Actually my accommodations along the Albany are far better than my home in the states. The large lodges are cleaned daily by the staff and include fireplaces, full bath and even towel service. Other amenities such as a lounge, pool table and sauna are also on the grounds. Don't worry sports fans there is a TV in the main lodge (It is never on though, with fishing this good you tend to forget about baseball). Wireless broadband is also available so you can at least pretend to care about what is happening back at the office.

Food & Drink

This is an American Plan Lodge which means you will be fed incredible food. Each day will begin with a carafe of coffee being delivered to your door followed by a hearty breakfast. Lunch can be in the form of a pack lunch or shore lunch depending on your adventure. Dinners are served after a happy hour and will be kept for you should you lose track of time. Snacks and drinks will be loaded up in your boat, float plane or canoe every morning to keep you fueled throughout the day.

packages

Your plane is waiting.

All trips originate out of Thunder bay Ontario and provide 4 days fishing, food and lodging in an all inclusive American Plan lodge. Remember that this is a northern destination and the summer days are VERY long. Pace yourself! Brook trout packages start at around $2k and we can custom tailor packages to meet the needs of your group.

The Single Haul

This packages includes one fly-out trip to either the Keezhik or the Troutfly. The remaining days of your trip will be be spent chasing pike, walleye and brookies in the Albany River. This is definitely the most relaxing plan we offer and a great vacation value. This trip is a great way of getting a shot at both a trophy brookie and a trophy pike.

The Double Haul

This packages includes two fly-out trips to the Keezhik, the Troutfly and/or the Albany River above Snake Falls (no snakes, just snaky looking from the air!). I think this is the real value in the trips. For only a little more money, you can add another brook trout fly out. This would be my choice as a serious brook trout fisherman.

The Grand Slam

Take it all in with three fly out packages including the Troutfly, the Keezhik and the Albany River above Snake Falls. After that you can spend your extra day fishing above or below Miminiska Falls for brookies, breaking your rod on trophy pike in the weed beds or catching walleye out of the deeper water until your arms hurt. This package is for the angler with an endless supply of energy. You will be tired of smiling after this trip.

If you have any questions about these packages or fishing in Northwestern Ontario please don't hesitate to contact us at albanyriver@nativebrooktrout.com.
